Address: Norrala kyrkogård, 82694 Norrala

In the 11th century, Hälsingland province was visited by the missionary St. Stephen.

The Swedish Vikings long stuck to their old Norse religion. Many missionaries faced a brutal death when trying to evangelize among the savage pagans of Sweden. The missionary St. Stephen (Swedish: Staffan) was met with great skepticism and had to flee for his life through the deserted forests of Hälsingland. In the place known as Själstuga he was run down and brutally stoned to death. His body was brought back to Norrala where a monument was erected over his tomb. The monument still stands today in Norrala Cemetary. At the murder scene in Själstuga a memorial stone was erected in 1928 commemorating St. Stephen. The stone was inaugurated by archbishop Nathan Söderblom, a native of the area.
